Elvin Bisop Elvin Bishop
"Getting My Groove Back"
Blind Pig Records

Elvin Bishop was an original member of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. After three albums and numerous personnel changes Elvin left the band and ventured off to form his own. He scored hits with "Travelin' Shoes", "Sure Feels Good" and "Fooled Around and Fell In Love". Elvin has played with everyone from Muddy Waters to Santana, and he has always shown us good musical sensibilities and good times. This is his first studio album in seven years.

There is not a lot of flash here. What we have is Elvin Bishop displaying his craft. Unfortunately Elvin has recently experienced personal tragedy and loss. This album is part of Elvin's healing process and thus the title "Gettin' My Groove Back". These are good compositions, well executed and yes, there are still good times to be had.

Opening with the Hound Dog Taylor sounding "What The Hell Is Going On", I'm reminded of "Give Me Back My Wig". Then comes the spiritual-like "I'll Be Glad", Elvin re-asserts "when I get my groove back again", and I think he has.

The Don Gibson classic, "Sweet Dreams" popularized by Patsy Cline follows. Here it is an instrumental and Elvin Bishop's slide guitar and Henry Butler's organ create the perfect balance between joy and sorrow. "That's My Thing" follows with its funky piano and Norton Buffalo's harmonica. "Blues Train" is a fun ride with Henry Butler's piano and Ed Earley's trombone. "He's A Dog" is a tribute to man's best friend.

Where You At? "Got To Be New Orleans" is for our favorite city; now more than ever. Ed Earley, trombone and Terry Hanck, saxophone help on this anthem. "Come On Blues, help me make it through", follows.

Elvin closes the album by including "Party Til The Cows Come Home". This song has once again been reprised from Elvin's earlier albums as it has become associated with the good time music of Elvin Bishop. Be sure to catch Elvin Bishop at BB King's Blues Club and Grill, 237 W 42nd st, NYC on Jan 20th, 2006. Show your love, and "let it flow".
