Donna Jean and the Tricksters

By Ray Pellis

It's been a long time since we've heard the harmonizing voice of Donna Jean on a recording. In fact, this is her first album since the 90's and her first collaboration on an album with the Tricksters. We can't forget her great years with the Dead in the 70's and this is a nice way to return. Let's not also forget her earlier days as a session singer in the Muscle Shoals studios backing singers like Percy Sledge, Boz Scaggs, Cher and even Elvis.

The Tricksters history dates back to the 80's which includes appearances in all of the "Gathering of the Vibes". They have been noted as one of the best Dead-oriented bands and members have shared the stage with NRPS, Phil Lesh and Friends and Ratdog. They share great song writing, playing and vocal abilities which is evident all over this album.

This is a well written, sung, played and produced CD. It starts off with "All I Gotta Say" that has the Memphis style soul sound that Donna brings with her from her Muscle Shoals days. The Tricksters bring some of their good jams early on with shades of Bruce Hornsby singing and playing on "So Hard". Almost half way through you get a taste of the ballad side of Donna Jean and then some tasteful Dead sounds are mixed in the following songs. The CD really peaks with the 13 plus minutes of "Me and Kettle Joe" well played and sung.

The Tricksters have some tricks up their sleeve on this album and they are all good ones. There is a lot of tasty guitar and percussion scattered throughout with everyone contributing to the harmonies. The band also takes their turn showing off their writing skills and the CD has a good flow of songs. .
