Aynsley Lister Aynsley Lister is a rockin' Brit who is popular in Europe. Now approaching thirty years old, Lister is about to focus more heavily on the Blues. To introduce himself in the States he has reissued his most Blues-oriented album, previously available only as an import; plans to release an all new Blues album are scheduled for next year.
Aynsley Lister reminds me about how I got excited listening to music when I was an adolescent. Opening with "Everything I Need", the band puts out the right amount of energy and, although the lyric is weak, the psycho-sound sustained after the guitar break causes one to want to keep listening. "Angel O' Mine" and "Soundman" are solid rock tunes. Then Aynsley does something totally unexpected, he tackles an all acoustic version of Tony Joe White's "As The Crow Flies". Tony Joe White has authored "Rainy Night in Georgia" and "Polk Salad Annie" among many other songs, and is a formidable talent. Aynsley Lister's version is performed exquisitely. The fact he chose this song shows an appreciation for Roots music not noticeable on the album's first three tracks. "Without U" and "In The Beginning" are solid Country-Rock tunes and I can visualize the audience singing along with him. Lister can sing. His clarity and enunciation help. Jesse Davey's production throughout this recording is meticulous.
Lister surprises listeners again when he gives us "Quiet Boy!", an original guitar instrumental. Lister's opening tone is reminiscent of Albert Collins. The track shows his maturity as a guitarist as he builds drama on this Ronnie Earl structured composition. "I Believe" and "Need Her So Bad" are two more solid tunes. Lister concludes with Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing", combining solo guitar and vocals in a surprisingly touching version of this song. There is also a hidden track where Aynsley plays a National Steel guitar. Aynsley Lister's guitar chops prove he has already gained expertise; with the passing of time, one can only wonder what this young talent might accomplish.
